I thought I'd share some of my top tips from my own experience of living with Type 1 Diabetes to help you live a healthy life with the condition. There are hundreds I could write but these are the ones I've narrowed it down to and have found most helpful. If you have any additional tips please comment them down below for others to read.
1) Always test. If you are ever in doubt about how you feel or what your sugars are at, TEST!
2) Have back up at all times. Back up insulin, back up testing strips, back up glucose sweets, back up needles. You never know when you might need them.
3) Reduce carbs and sugars at night. What I've learned to do and what I've found has been hugely beneficial is reducing carbs at night time. I know this can't always be done because we may be out with friends or at an evening dinner but try to when you can. I generally don't eat carbs after 10pm. This lets my sugars settle before bed and it reduces the risk of a hypo or high blood sugars throughout the night.
4) Be confident. Don't be afraid to let people know about your diabetes. This is a condition millions of people around the world have. Be confident about your own diabetes. The more people who know, the more help you can get.
5) Try to eat healthy. I'm sure it's something you've heard thousands of times and are almost sick of hearing. But for diabetics this is very important. Of course you can have a balanced diet and treat yourself to the foods you love but for the most part try to eat cleanly. Avoiding sugary, unhealthy foods and sticking to the good stuff will reduce the risk of hypos and high blood glucose. It will benefit you in the long run.
6) Educate yourself. Diabetes is a complicated condition. Try to educate yourself as much as possible by reading, listening and watching. The more you know, the better your management will be.
7) Create a routine. Having a solid routine will make things a lot easier. Try to take your morning and night time insulin at the same times each day (or close enough). Also, try to have set meals instead of snacking throughout the day.
8) Resistance training. Resistance training is one of the best things you can do for your body. You can use hand-held weights, machines, resistance bands or even your own body weight for strength training. There are specific benefits of resistance training for diabetics. It helps the body respond better to insulin, improves the way it uses blood sugar, promotes weight loss and lowers your risk of heart disease.
9) Carb count. This is extremely useful! Most medical specialists advise that newly diagnosed diabetics use 1 unit of insulin per 10g of carbohydrate. This may not be exactly the right formula for you but start at that. It takes a lot of glucose testing and trial and error to find out how many units you need for each meal. You'll figure it out!
10) 'Keep stirring the pot'. This was an expression one of the diabetic nurses used during the first couple of days of my diagnoses. Basically, what she meant by this was that diabetes doesn't take over your life. You can do everything you have always done and be as fit as you've always been, you just have to keep a constant eye on your diabetes. Keep stirring!
